Connect OpenClaw to Instagram

Let an OpenClaw agent publish posts, read insights and answer comments and DMs on an Instagram business account, with no credentials handed to the agent.

Instagram is where brands, creators and small businesses meet their audience: feed posts, carousels, stories and a direct-message inbox that never quite empties. Running an account well is a steady stream of small chores. Someone has to publish on schedule, check which posts actually performed, answer the same product questions in comments, and keep an eye on DMs so a customer does not wait two days for a reply.

With Claworc’s External Connections, an OpenClaw agent can do that work inside an Instagram business account on your behalf. You sign in to Instagram once through a popup, Composio holds the resulting token, and the agent gets an auto-generated claworc-instagram skill that tells it which Instagram tools exist and how to call them. The agent never sees a password, an OAuth token or an API key.

Composio’s Instagram toolkit exposes 29 actions. In practice an OpenClaw agent leans on a handful of capabilities:

  • Publish posts — create a media container from an image or video URL and caption, then publish it to the feed.
  • Build carousels — assemble a multi-image carousel post before publishing it the same way.
  • List recent posts — the account’s recent posts with their captions, timestamps and media types.
  • Read insights — pull reach, impressions and engagement for a single post or for the account as a whole.
  • Read and reply to comments — see the comments on a post and answer them.
  • Handle DMs — see the inbox and answer a conversation.
  • Check the publishing quota — how much of the daily publishing limit is left before scheduling a batch of posts.

Every action goes through a small broker running next to the agent, so the agent only needs to describe what it wants done in plain language and let the skill handle the rest.

Ask the agent every Monday to list last week’s posts, fetch insights for each one and send you a short ranking: which post reached the most people, which carousel got the most saves, and how the account’s overall reach moved against the week before. You get the numbers without opening the app and tapping through each post.

Point the agent at the account’s newest posts and have it read the comments, answer the straightforward questions (“Do you ship to Canada?”, “Is this still in stock?”) from your FAQ, and flag anything that needs a human. The same pass over the DM inbox catches customer messages that would otherwise sit unread.

Keep next month’s posts in a spreadsheet or docs folder with image links and captions. On the day, the agent checks the publishing limit, builds the media container or carousel, and publishes it. If a caption needs a last-minute tweak, tell the agent and it edits the draft before it goes live.

Connecting Instagram takes three steps: an admin adds a Composio API key to Claworc’s settings, you open the instance’s Settings tab, click + Add connection, pick Instagram and sign in. The claworc-instagram skill appears in the instance a moment later. The full walkthrough, including the exact Composio permissions the key needs, is in the External Connections documentation.
